Race Concept

RACE CONCEPT

  • Teams of two will trail run, kayak and mountain bike on a marked course.
  • A cycle transition will be set up at the start / finish area. Teams to leave cycles at this transition. Teams will place cycle helmets and life jackets in a bag provided by organisers. This bag will be taken to kayak start by organisers. Event starts with a trail run ending at river edge, teams will paddle down river to take out point, a short trail run will bring them to the cycle transition. Teams to collect cycles and complete cycle loop to finish.
  • The Fluid Multisport Challenge forms part of the All Things Adventure weekend at Stonehenge in Africa.
  • Kinetic provides double sit on top kayaks and paddles. Participants must provide own life jackets. Rental life jackets are available for R 30 per jacket for event - payment and collection at reception. Mail Stephan at bio@netactive.co.za to book sizes XL, L, M, S.
  • The event will take place as scheduled. Adverse weather conditions (rain, hail, lightning etc.) will not affect event and the organizers do not take any responsibility if conditions affect participants in any way. Entrants with safety concerns can select not to participate. There are no cancellation refunds.

  • Description: Grass / Tar road / Dirt Road / Jeep track / Single track.

LEG 2 - RIVER KAYAK 

    • Distance: 2 km
    • Altitude gain / loss: -  10 m
    • Description: Level 1 rapids / Level 2 rapids (depending on water levels)
    • Markings: Follow river, until take out river right at Fluid flag.

    LEG 3 - TRAIL RUN 

    • Distance: 0.5 km
    • Altitude gain / loss: +  12 m / - 4 m 
    • Description: Grass track.
    • Markings: Follow red arrows on white plastic boards.

    LEG 4 - MOUNTAIN BIKE

    • Distance: 20 km
    • Altitude gain / loss: + 210 / - 210 m
    • Description: Grass Track / Dirt Road / Jeep track / Single track / Tar road.

    • The festival will be held from the 24 to 26 February 2017.
    • Enjoy a wonderful weekend next to the Vaal river at Stonehenge River Lodge near Parys for an action packed weekend programme. Various exhibitors for the outdoor enthusiasts and presentations for adventure bikes and 4 x 4's. Partake in our adventure competitions and win big prizes. There will also be a crafters market and live music.

    Hugh du Preez has been involved in whitewater activities since 1990, Hugh du Preez is a certified kayak instructor, safety kayaker, high angle rescue trainer, Emergency Care Practitioner Basic, First Aid and CPR instructor and Chief Instructor for the African Paddling Association.

    Hugh has paddled extensively throughout Southern Africa and also spent four seasons working in Canada. He represented South Africa at the World Whitewater Championships held in Canada in 1997 and in Sort, Spain in 2001.



    The Basics of White Water Kayaking

    THE BASICS OF WHITE WATER KAYAKING

    • The easiest route through a rapid is to follow the water flow. Most of the water will be flowing in the deepest channel, identifiable by a "V" that will be visible when approaching the rapid. Staying in this "V" will keep the kayak in deep enough water and get you through the rapid.
    • Waves are formed by either pressure from water or from obstacles in the river. Waves that line up will most likely be pressure waves. Solitary waves occurring at random will be rocks or other obstacles.
    • When the kayak gets turned sideways, lean downriver lifting the upriver side. This is counterintuitive, but if not done the upriver side of the kayak will be pushed under by the force of the river and it will flip over. This is called being window-shaded or window-shading.
    • Always keep an active paddle blade in the water. That is to say, do not rest and let the river carry you along. Small corrective strokes will keep the kayak pointed in the right direction. Keeping the paddle blade in the water will also allow you to brace faster to prevent capsizing.
    • The outer side of bends will tend to collect silt, sand and pebbles, and will be shallower than the inner side. When approaching a curve in the river look for the "V" on the inner bend side.
    • Do not follow other kayakers through a rapid closely. They may get into a bit of trouble and need time to make corrections. Being on top of someone is not just rude, it can be dangerous for them.

    • When water passes by an object, a low pressure area that flows upriver called an eddy is formed. To rest in an eddy do a sharp pivot turn as close to the object as you can, getting behind it. This is called eddying out.

    • Get into the habit of looking at the river. Look for eddies, holes or rocks, and pay attention to how and where waves are formed.
    • Try surfing a gentle wave. When passing the wave, turn back upriver allowing the eddy to pull the kayak into the wave. It will be necessary to paddle upriver a bit. Put the bow of the kayak right into the wave. Use the paddle as a rudder.
    • Ferrying is using the river current to carry the kayak side to side across the river. Do this by pointing upriver. Use the paddle as a rudder to adjust the angle of the kayak to the river so it pulls the kayak across. With practice it is possible to cross a river in a perfectly straight line. With more practice, it is possible to cross a river, ending up upstream of where you started.
    • Mostly have fun. Stay with milder rivers as your skills develop. Jumping into big water right off can turn a fun and exciting day into a terrifying experience.

    Event Rules & Regulations

    EVENT RULES & REGULATIONS

    General Rules

    • The first team to complete the event, having complied with all rules and regulations, will be considered the winning team.

    • Team members have to within sight and hearing distance of each other at all times during the event.

    • Competitors are to complete the entire event without any assistance.

    • Competitors are required to follow the course as designed by the Organiser.

    Supporters

    • No support members will be required. Supporters are welcome to support their competitors progress at transitions. These transition areas will be indicated at race briefing.

    • No physical support is allowed. Any form of physical support will lead to the competitor’s disqualification.

    • Supporters may provide moral support.

    • Supporters are to have read these Standard Rules and Regulations as well as the Event Specific Rules.

    Medical Assistance

    • Medical crews will be available for medical treatment and consultation.

    • Medical treatment is limited to basic first aid and advice. Should a competitor require advanced life support, active fluid replacement therapy (IV), the administration of any oral or intravenous drug, then that competitor, subject to the Race Director’s final decision, will be prevented from continuing with the event.

    • The medical crew has the authority, on confirmation of the Race Director, to withdraw a competitor from an event should the competitor’s further participation in the event possibly result in permanent injury, disability or death to the competitor.

    • Competitors are obliged to carry the personal medications on them. The medical crew will not be on hand to supply personal medication should the competitors concerned have failed to supply their own.

    • The medical crew will provide immediate emergency treatment and stabilization. Should a competitor require transport by road or air ambulance, the cost of any transport out of the race environment will be carried by the patient

    • Competitors are strongly advised to take appropriate insurance against the costs of emergency evacuations.

     Results & Complaints & Appeals

    • Competitors crossing the finish will be given a “line finish position”. This is pending the outcome of illegal substance test results, complaints and/or any further information coming to the organisers’ knowledge.

    • All complaints and/or queries are to be directed to the organisers and/or their Management Team.

    • In the event of there being discrepancies in finishing positions resulting from such reports and/or complaints, the Prize Giving will only take place after a verdict has been reached by the Race Director.

    • Any objections to positions announced at prize giving must be given immediately, once prizes has been handed over the results will be final.

    •  Abusive language will not be tolerated. Persons wishing to express outrage will do so in a controlled manner.

    • Winners must be present at Prize Giving to qualify for prizes.

    • Any competitor wishing to appeal or complain any aspect of the event can do so. Complaints are to be received by the Race Director within 30 minutes of the competitor crossing the finish line. Complaints may only be made with firsthand knowledge. No second-hand reports will be accepted or considered. Appeals regarding decisions are to be received by the Race Director within 30 minutes of the decision.

    • The Event Organiser, as advised by senior marshals, will consider appeals. 

    Disqualification/Time Penalties

    • Any competitor who has not completed the entire course will be disqualified.

    •  Any individual, male or female, will be barred from all events for life if found to have used physical violence during the course of the event.

    • Any abuse of or disregard for instructions given by race marshals by any competitor will result in immediate disqualification.

    • Any competitor found to have transgressed the rules and regulations of the event and/or acting contrary to the spirit of the event will be liable for disqualification.

    • The Race Director may impose a disqualification or penalty taking into consideration the spirit of the event. A statement will be requested from the applicable competitor should he/she wish to explain or justify his/her actions.

    Spirit of the Event

    • Not cheating with regard to the rules and regulations of this event and the sport.

    • Where one competitor finds another in need of medical attention – they must stop to assist.

    • Abiding by the rules and regulations of this event and sport.

    • Being eco-friendly, polite and prepared to assist a fellow man in need.

    • Not misleading organisers and/or marshals with inaccurate/incomplete information.

    • Not removing direction boards or signage of any sort.
