Sunday, September 1, 2019.

Today Expedition Africa 2019 Rodrigues began.

YYuusssssss.

You know you’re racing on an island when:

The race starts at 1pm because that’s when high tide is.

While waiting for the waves to roll into the shore line, some special moments were taken during the morning at Mourouk Beach.

Contrasts are powerful. Amidst the rush to get bikes finely tuned, sails perfectly rigged, and triple checking the details of the kit boxes, everyone in the Expedition Africa family took a quiet moment together, to hold hands and remember lost loved ones. #itsallaboutlove.

Soon after that, with a motley looking line up of local sailing boats with sails of various styles, 60 teams took off down the beach, hurled themselves into their allocated boats, and it was off into unknown waters they headed.

Rodrigues does sailing very well, and it was thanks to the huge generosity of boat owners here that we were able to intertwine such an iconic leg into this race.

If you’re imagining a traditional regatta with boats sailing off into the distance slicing perfectly through the trade winds, you are mistaken.

Before long we had a couple of capsizes, water being bailed out of boats with buckets and flippers, some crew members in the rescue boat, and one team member being accidentally left on the shore and forced to swim to her boat as it sailed away.

Then, after the teams made their way around a couple of buoys, even managing to tack and shift around aboard their vessels, it was all about reaching the edge of the reef, pulling on some flippers and mask, and diving into the water for a solid stint of snorkeling and navigating underwater checkpoints.

A bit like a scene out of the times of the Spanish Armada, it was a wild start to any race.

Welcome to the wild east, not the Wild West.

So there you have it, the first ever adventure race for this little island in the Indian Ocean is now officially underway. If the crowd of 3000 local Rodriguans was anything to go by, this was one significantly special moment not just for the adventure racing community, but for everyone here as well.

As we head into night one, teams will be trekking and mountain biking through the dark hours, after their whizz down the zip line this afternoon.

Tides will be throwing a few curve balls into the next few days, with paddling legs being injected throughout the race.

Let the fun unfold.
